I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream (A Giveaway)
*Giveaway has now ended*
Ever read a recipe book that had you drooling from practically the first page?
Considering that summer is promising to stay hot for a while longer, when I first read Just Making Ice Cream, I could hardly resist jumping up from a cozy table in the coffee shop where I do some of my blogging so that I could stick my ice cream maker in the freezer.
I love all manner of savory food. There probably isn’t a style of food that I don’t love (Italian, Thai, Greek, Japanese, Indian…). But I’m also a sucker for two sweet treats, namely dark chocolate and ice cream. So when I started reading recipe names like Salty Caramel Pecan, Double Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Lemon Cherry Swirl Cheesecake and Yum Rum Raisin, I was a goner.
The ebook’s author, Mare Beard, lists some might fine reasons why it’s infinitely better to make, rather than buy, your ice cream:
- It’s more frugal.
- Use healthier and natural ingredients. {A huge reason in my books!}
- Ability to make it allergen-free.
- For taste and quality.
- Because it’s environmentally healthy {no packaging, right?}
- Avoid hidden ingredients
- You are in control of your food.
- Choose your style, favorite flavors, and be creative!
- Great activity for family and friends.
- Have an ice cream party!
This 113 page ebook includes a wonderful section on the ingredients used for ice cream, different types of makers, ice cream making methods, tips and techniques, and then moves on to 63 ice cream, gelato and sorbet recipes, as well as some toppings and fun extras.
Our family can’t wait to try some of her scrumptious sounding recipes, especially with this late summer heat that we’re enjoying. Sounds like a perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

Ooh, those flavors sound so good! I’m drooling over Salted Carmel Pecan. Makes me think of Starbuck’s Salted Carmel Hot Chocolate. I want to make me own to do it a little bit healthier for my family.

In my recent trip to the grocery store, I spent quiet a bit of time reading the ingredients in America’s favorite brands of ice cream. For the vast majority, I could only pronounce one or two of the ingredients. I really want to make my own so I can control the luscious fruits and velvety cream. I could have faith in what I place in my body. Right now, blackberry season is wrapping up and what better way to use them than blackberry ice cream. Apple season is coming up, I would love to see the fundamentals of making ice cream so I could turn some of those apples in apple and cinnamon ice cream.

I have always wanted to make my own ice cream with my children and have been asking for an ice cream maker for Christmas for years. Problem with that is they are often hard to find during the winter – go figure 😉 I finally got my maker this spring from a girlfriend and would love to try some of the recipes mentioned in this book with my children. We just started homeschooling our oldest and I can think of a million ways to incorporate make your own food into our schooling – THANK YOU!
I love making ice cream because it takes me back to my childhood when we’d make ice cream in an old-fashioned ice cream maker using rock salt and snow (well, ice mainly but the kids would add snow). I loved the anticipation of waiting for it to harden. Now with my counter-top ice cream maker I can actually watch the ice cream get hard. I can’t wait till my son is old enough to enjoy the process with me!

Love Just Making Noise blog!
About a year and a half ago my son was diagnosed with multiple food sensitivities. Eggs is at the top of the list of thirty-seven. So, in an effort to control the ingredients, we have been making our own at home since then. By “we” I mean me and my husband. And by that I mean I tell him make some ice cream and he does. 🙂 It’s good and we brag about our homemade ice cream but let’s be real, we are stuck in the vanilla rut. We need some new recipes! Thanks!

1. I’m in Arizona and it hovers over 100 degrees these days.
2. Some days only ice cream will do (and I happen to LOVE ice cream!)
Thank you for sharing/partnering with Just Making Noise! I had hear the name before but never took time to check her out. Having severe hearing loss myself I was delighted to see her blog. I commented on her “what’s that noise” post from several yearsa go when she was describing how she answers her children’s question “what’s that noise, mommy.”

I was just talking with my husband, how I really wanted to start putting our ice cream maker to better use. Instead of a once a year type thing. Getting this recipe book would definately be a motivator!
Oh I love ice cream. I love being able to customize my own flavors and know that all the ingredients in there are pure.

I would love to make ice cream because #1- It is homemade. And #2- It is a cheap treat! Got to love both those reasons! Thanks for the giveaway!
Got an ice cream maker this summer, but I needed some inspiration to try it 🙂 We all have milk allergies, so have been missing ice cream. It sounds like this book is just what I need.
Well, this family loves icecream. They are always looking in the freezer and at this time I really only buy one kind but it’s not organic. As I child, when the family got together, they would get out the old hand crank freezer and lay newspapers on top outside in the drive. Someone would crank and one of the kids would get to sit on the newspapers to keep it from moving around. As a kid, you knew you were helping. Anyway, black walnut was my grandmas favorite and that’s what we make alot. For me, I would love new recipes. Icecream reminds people of favorite flavors. It reminds me of my grandma first, then my favorite flavor *any chocolate!*.
We make our own ice cream because of food intolerances. Our favorite is chocolate made with coconut milk.

I love homemade ice cream. It brings back great memories of family times as a child and store bought milk makes me sick, so I like the control of ingredients. Coffee flavored or anything with fruit
I would love to make homemade ice cream to know exactly what’s in it. That’s very important to me. I’m also working on a source for raw milk. This would be a great way to get some into my family.
I’m already a follower.
We are trying not to buy processed foods, but Icecream is one item we still buy. I know there is junk in it and would love to make my own so I know exactly what is in it. i can also be creative with the flavors! My all time favorite flavor is strawberry.

I just love ice cream and making it myself, I can create one with everything that I like in it.
My top reason for making our own ice-cream is because of dairy allergies. We have a goat and use goat milk to make ice-cream. My favorite is mint chocolate chip, but because of ease and cost we usually make a fruit ice-cream and my favorite fruit ice-cream is raspberry peach.

Ice cream is my absolute favorite treat and I’d like to try making my own since it would be good to know about the ingredients. My favorite flavor is anything with nuts – especially pistachio!
Although we had a traditional ice cream maker (ice & rock salt) I never made it because of the hassle. We just received an ice cream maker where you freeze the canister (Cuisinart), eliminating the ice and salt- no mess! Now we make it often. No fake or unwanted ingredients. Our favorite by far has been the cheesecake, made with cream cheese (even my yogurt cheese left from making whey) with homemade raspberry sauce.

I want to make my own ice cream so that I can give my kids (and me) a treat an know exactly what is going into it. I remember making ice cream as a kids and thought it was the greatest thing ever!
My top reason for wanting to make ice cream is so that I can make it lactose free, since a couple people in my family are lactose intolerant. I’m sure this book would be awesome in helping with that. =)

Top reason for making my own ice cream? Cause the stuff you buy in the store isn’t ice cream anymore. Its “Frozen dairy dessert” whatever that means. that’s a scary thought, right? I shudder t o think.

My top reason for making my own ice cream: I can’t eat dairy while nursing my baby. And anything non-dairy to be bought it so expensive!

Why I want this book:
I’ve wanted to make my own ice cream and/or gelato. Would love to have some inspiring recipes!
Controlling ingredients is important to me, since my family is gluten-free.
We LOVE ice cream, but it’s a once-in-a-while purchase, since we’re on a single-income (teacher salary!).
Favorite flavors: Rocky Road, Salted Caramel, and good old-fashioned vanilla. And the picture on the front of the book has my ears perked up and my mouth salivating!
I like you on facebook, too. 🙂 I just like you a lot.
Ice cream is my biggest weakness, but buying it is both pricey and unhealthy. I would love to learn how to make my own at home!

Hi- I love homemade ice cream and just recently bought an ice cream maker. We have been trying different recipes that came with the maker but would love some really good recipes to try! I am a subscriber to keeper of the home. I liked you on fb, I also visited Mare’s blog.
My reason for wanting to make home made ice cream? Ben and jerry’s is over priced, and while ice cream tastes wonderful store bought, home made tastes better, and it doesn’t contain a bunch of ingredients I can’t pronounce.
My favorite flavor of ice cream is definitely cookie dough! I Also love Ben and jerry’s americone dream and phish food! Om nom nom..
With 26 food allergies in our family of 6, it is VERY hard to find an ice cream flavor that is okay for everyone to eat. It get’s tiresome calling companies to find out what “natural flavors” are.
I am an email subscriber too. 😀
I’m sure you’ve read the ingredients of ice cream in the store….and while it can be tasty, there are about 100 things in there I don’t really want my family eating. I’d love to minimize the ingredient list and still enjoy a treat!
Since my son was born, I’ve been on a crusade to make everything from scratch. If I don’t make it myself, then we don’t eat it…which means I’m definitely missing ice cream! I need to learn to make it myself, my two year old would LOVE trying some!
Rocky road mmm the more chunks the better!

We’d really like to turn ice cream making in to a family event – I’m even pondering getting a hand-crank machine so that we can all take turns (5 kids so far, so lots of hands to help eventually!)

I would love to win these books because I grew up in a family that made homemade icecream every summer. I have wonderful memories of taking turns cranking the icecream. My favorite flavor is still one called Brown Bread icecream, which was maple flavors with semi-crunchy grapenuts. Yum!!
My top reasons are food sensitivities make store bought ice cream a difficult purchase and you just had me at “salty caramel”. Yum!

I just posted on facebook.
I would LOVE to learn how to make my own ice cream because I MISS ICE CREAM! I recently found out I am allergic to dairy, so have gone without my precious milkshakes. I did find one decent brand of coconut ice cream but it’s so expensive. It would ROCK to be able to learn how to make my own ice cream, especially anything that involves mint or cookies! Drooling as I remember what those flavors tasted like!
I love fruit ice cream – mmmm…..peach! But a yummy chocolate is great too!
Thanks for a chance to win!
I would love to make my own ice cream! My husband and I got an ice cream maker for ourselves for our 1 year anniversary, and we haven’t used it yet!

I have a problem with carragenan and guar gum and many of the artificial ingredients in store bought icecream. I would love to start making my own.Homemade mint chocolate chip sounds heavenly!!!You know what is in it when you make it yourself.

My daughter is allergic to soy and isn’t able to eat many commerically available ice creams. It would be great to make our own and know that they’re safe for her to eat!

I would love to learn more about making ice cream at home. I have multiple food intolerances, and if I could once again have this tasty treat in my life…that would be wonderful!
I made my own chocolate ice cream once and it reminded me of Wendy’s Frosty’s. I just cant remember what ingredients I used. Was it coconut milk or heavy cream??? and cant remember what sugar I used…But would love this book for ideals on other flavors.

I got an ice cream maker last Christmas and have only used it twice! A travesty. So I would love ideas for ice cream flavors and if they’re made with nourishing ingredients, all the better. I’m a sucker for chocolate and strawberry ice creams.

I would love it because my son has peanut and egg allergies. I only have one recipe we use and haven’t ventured too far out. I think ALL the flavors would be amazing. We love them all
#3. Ability to make it allergen free.
The number one reason I make ice cream at home! My littlest often has to watch others eat ice cream because he’s allergic. So to have lots of options for him is always great!

I would love this recipe book! Our family loves to eat ice cream. When we finally were able to buy raw milk and cream and farm fresh eggs, I bought a 2qt electric ice cream maker. I’d love more recipes to try different flavors. Right now we usually just do vanilla and add toppings.
I prefer to control the ingredients in our food and our “sonny-boy” can’t have dairy ice cream. Favorite? Mint Chocolate Chip is right there next to plain ol’ vanilla bean.
Every year, we make homemade ice cream at my husband’s family’s reunions. I love the ability to control what we are putting in the ice cream. My favorite flavor is chocolate with chocolate chunks. Yum!

It is more frugal and I can control the ingredients better.

I would love to make my own ice cream!
My top reason for wanting to make my own is because I try to limit what we eat from boxes and cans. I already make my own ice cream toppings, now just need the ice cream!! My favorite is coffee!

@Jennifer Moore, It was probably just waiting for moderation. Some comments have to wait for me to approve them, if you’ve never commented before or aren’t a regular commenter. That’s all! 🙂
My top reasons are to avoid the icky ingredients in store ice cream and to be more frugal (which means we can eat more ice cream!).
My top reasons include that I have had an ice cream maker since last Christmas and still have not ever used it (unsure which recipe to try), we are on a tight budget and making my own ice cream would be much cheaper than buying it, and I want to use the very best real food ingredients.
Thank you!
I already follow your RSS feed and I really like it.
Salty caramel??? sign me up!!! I like any kind of coconut or peanut butter ice cream. I think I’d like making my own because I know the ingredients (no corn syrup) and I can be creative!

Wow, this book looks awesome! I would have a hard time choosing between strawberry and chocolate.
I receive RSS feeds. I would like to try something dairy-free for my son and use natural flavors and colors in our ice cream. I like cherry or peppermint chocolate chip and many others.

I want to make my own because then I know what’s in the ice cream (not fillers that make the ice cream less meltable), it’s less expensive, and I can make up my own flavors. For my last birthday I treated myself to a KitchenAid attachment to make ice cream, but have only used it once. This should inspire me!

I’ve been making my own, but it’s usually plain flavors (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry), so this would be lovely to get some better ideas! Is that sherbet in the picture? My husband would LOVE that!

The idea of home-made icecream; so many flavours that I could never buy in a shop; knowing what is IN my icecream; being able to serve something completely different and out-of-the-ordinary and tasty………. All of these things are the reason I would love this book!
Homemade always has one ingredient that cannot be found in any store bought ice cream…LOVE! As a new first time Mommy, I want to train up my daughter in the way she should go so she will not depart from it. I want for her to get to enjoy yummy ice cream without it being processed and nutritionally void or stressing her body with refined sugars! Thank you so much for this opportunity!

I like making my own because it is becoming harder and harder to find brands that are not filled with all kinds of “stuff”.

I would love to win this to make some delicious treats for my 2-year old!! She is allergic to eggs and citrus and usually all of the more natural good-for-you ice creams have eggs! And, her momma is a HUGE ice cream fan. 🙂

Why I want to make homemade ice cream? How long do you have???
I have really fond memories of my dad making homemade ice cream for the 4th of July – so making ice cream feels very patriotic to me. The DH & I LOVE ice cream, but can’t afford to buy the stuff we don’t feel guilty for eating.
Finally – what would I make? Strawberry. With fresh chunks of strawberry. Topped in homemade chocolate syrup. MM…..
I read a blog review of ice cream at Heavenly Homemakers a few months back and she did an experiment by leaving regular ice cream out of the freezer…scary how it still looked the same after several days! So I would like to actually use my ice cream maker and make my own!

I’d like to make my own ice cream so I can control the ingredients and because its cheaper. My favorite flavor is cookies and cream, although I’ll eat pretty much any type of ice cream!
We love to make our own ice cream and control what is going into our food!
My husband and I are ice cream lovers to the max! A friend of ours just enlightened us about making ice cream at home – an ice cream maker is #1 on our christmas list this year! We want to make our own ice cream to save money and to control the ingredients in our fav. treat. Our favorite flavors are: butter pecan, moose tracks, and mint chocolate chip! Sharing this giveaway via facebook!!
I make my own ice cream because that way I know exactly what’s in it. The taste is so much better than anything you can buy in the store too. Plus you can make all kinds of flavors that aren’t available in the typical grocery store.

I’d like to win this because ice cream is pretty much my favorite food. Even the good kinds have some bad stuff in them and they’re expensive!

I want to make my own ice cream because of the ridiculously long ingredient list on most flavored ice creams in the store! I just bought some this weekend for a treat and purposely didn’t look at the ingredients because I was trying to make hubs happy and wanted to remain ignorant of how they made it taste that good. Just think though–if I could make chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream at home?? Best of both worlds!!! Thanks for the info about the book!

My father-in-law makes fabulous homemade ice cream. I really want to start making our own for 2 reasons. 1. a little more inconvenient to eat since you have to make it 2. probably much healthier.
my top reasons for wanting to win is because I love ice cream, and I just bought a new ice cream maker!

I would like to make my own ice cream because I eat way too much of it, and if I can make some that is a little healthier than what I buy in the store, that would be great! My absolute fave is Mint Chocolate Chip… anything chocolate, or coffee flavored… mmmmmm. 🙂

I’ve been making my own ice cream this summer because my little kiddo is at an age (just shy of two) when he can enjoy the summer treat. So, of course, I make my own to ensure that it has the best ingredients possible without any nasty additives. His favorite: pistachio gelato. Does this kid have great taste or what? My husband and I love Mexican chocolate ice cream. It’s sweet; it’s spicy; it deserves to be immortalized in a bronze statue that’s proudly displayed in a town square. I’d love to experiment with more flavors please. This would would be great for that endeavor.

Our family ice cream, and I am starting to make my own at home. I live in the Middle East and there are limited varieties of shop-bought ice cream here. We live in a very warm climate currently 38C, and it would be just wonderful to have some fresh inspiration to whip up my own delicious flavours. Another BIG plus is that I would know exactly what it contained if I made the recipe at home!
