A mom can brag a little, can’t she?

I just couldn't resist sharing this little video we made last week, for the talent show put on by members of the homeschool group at our church!

(Note- There's about 5 seconds of dead time at the beginning, then the video kicks in, so just be patient with my lack of YouTube skills and wait for it!)

  8. We are using the “Big Truths for Little Kids” that I have linked down near the bottom of my right sidebar. The stories in it are mildly above Abbie at 3 1/2 (probably better for a 5 or 6 year old), but the catechism questions are excellent, as are the scriptures used. I highly recommend it!

Unfortunately, we didn’t start it until this Spring, but that just shows you how much a little one can absorb in a short time! She has actually learned about 8-9 questions more than what’s in the video, but we thought it would be too long and get a bit boring, so we kept it short. Kids have amazing memories and she just loves doing it!

We chose Japanese for her because my husband and I lived in Japan for a year when we were first married, as English teachers. We both have a mildly decent grasp of the language, and then I landed a free Japanese picture dictionary from an older homeschool mom, so I decided to just go for it.

We’ll probably still do a more common language (ie. French or Spanish), as well as Latin and some Greek and Hebrew (yep, we’re somewhat classical homeschoolers). But this is a fun start for now!

For anyone interested in teaching their young ones a foreign language, start as young as possible! We didn’t start Abbie on it until this Spring and I regret that. The younger they are, the more easily they can pick up the sounds.

I studied language development a bit in university, and we learned that until the age of around 5, the neural pathways are there for them to develop the ability to speak in any language (to both speak and hear those difficult, distinct sounds that can be hard to learn as an adult). Once they hit about 5, the unused pathways close down, making it more difficult to learn.

I intend to start her on at least one more language in the next year for that reason, even if it’s mostly just exposure to it through listening. Anyways, that’s what you get when you ask a psychology major about teaching her children language. LOL!

  9. woman…you can do MORE than brag!!!! this is precious….you can do a happy dance upside down too 🙂

while playing it, my hubs was drawn away to come listen. i love it….

  11. This is great! Aren’t kids’ memories amazing? That’s one of the reasons I want to follow the classical model when we homeschool someday, to cash in on that early memorizing capacity. And I completely agree about foreign languages. I did some research in college on that myself, and it’s absolutely true that the younger they start, the better–even if it takes the child a little longer to form complete sentences in either language. I SO wish my mother had exposed me to other languages before high school. Gah! She did the very best she could, though, and I am very thankful for the education I received. God bless her.
